The most useful spare cable is one that actually charges your phone. Before buying accessories for a Yucatán stay, gather what you already own and test a small kit. Five unidentified cables take up more room without necessarily solving a problem.
Start with your devices
Note the connector on your phone and any other essential device. Check the charger’s output and the power bank’s charging input too. Similar-looking ports do not guarantee identical functions or power capability; read the accessory specifications.
If you are bringing a charger from another country, inspect its input label and the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance. A plug-shape adapter does not automatically convert voltage. Ask the manufacturer for help before connecting equipment if the label is unclear.
Apple’s safety guidance stresses compatible accessories, ventilation and undamaged cables. Follow the instructions for each device you own. Stop using a frayed cable, damaged plug or swollen battery rather than treating it as a backup.
Test the power bank beforehand
Charge the bank, connect your phone using the cable you intend to carry and verify that charging works. Then practise recharging the bank itself. You will discover a missing cable or incompatible port before you are heading out from Mérida.
Do not estimate usable battery life from the largest number on the packaging alone. Consumption depends on what you do, the phone’s condition and the day’s conditions. A trial with your actual setup is more useful than a promise of a certain number of full charges.
Make the routine repeatable
- Keep the main charger and cable in one place at your accommodation
- Store the power bank and its cable together
- Recharge the kit before a long outing
- Keep a way to read your return address without the phone
Charge on a dry, ventilated surface. Avoid charging under a pillow, inside a closed bag or in direct sun. If an outlet is loose, visibly damaged or does not hold the charger securely, use another and tell the person responsible for the property.
Match the kit to the day
For walking, prioritise manageable weight and a setup that fits without straining the connector. For working away from your accommodation, check whether the bank and charger can also power your computer if you expect them to. Sharing a USB-C shape does not establish that capability.
If you will fly, check your airline’s current battery rules before packing. Our guide to phone heat and moisture covers another important part of the plan. The aim is safe, dependable charging rather than charging at any cost.
