For a cruise call, start with the time you must be back on board. Write it down before choosing an excursion, then work backwards: the final transfer, possible waiting, travel from the activity and room for a delay. What remains is your usable time ashore.

Carnival distinguishes ship time from the latest return-to-ship time. Follow the instructions for your own cruise line and sailing. Do not assume a phone that changes time zones automatically shows the time used by the ship.

Pick one priority

You can stay in Progreso for a walk and time beside the sea, or choose an inland visit. Carnival’s Progreso destination page includes Mérida and Uxmal among inland possibilities. Both involve additional transport rather than an attraction beside the gangway.

With a limited window, start with the simplest option. Lunch and a walk can make a worthwhile port day. For Mérida, choose the area you want to see and be cautious about an offer combining city sightseeing, ruins, shopping and the beach without a clear division of time.

Draw the final transfer too

Ask where the excursion finishes and how you travel from that point back to the ship. Some proposals may drop passengers in town and leave another transfer to complete. One published Carnival excursion specifically describes a market drop-off followed by a shuttle back.

That example does not establish the arrangements for your booking. Find out the relevant location, boarding procedure and final departure. Being back in Progreso can still leave part of the journey to the gangway unfinished.

Compare ship-booked and independent arrangements

Ask the organiser for an itinerary that fits your call and the conditions applying to delays or a changed port. Responsibilities and protections depend on the contract. Do not rely on a casual promise that the ship will wait or assume every excursion offers the same protection.

If going independently, save the provider’s contact details and the assistance contact supplied by your cruise line. Carry the identification and disembarkation documents it requires, with an accessible record of the meeting point. Arrange the return transport before starting the visit.

Set your own finish time

Agree on a time to leave the activity before the actual deadline, with room for the complete journey back. The margin should reflect the route, connections and ship’s instructions. An alarm only helps if it uses the correct time reference.

If staying near the beach, our Progreso facilities guide can help you choose a comfortable spot. Build the cruise return into the plan at the beginning, before ordering another drink or adding one final stop.
