A map you opened last night is not much help if it disappears when you need the entrance. Before leaving Mérida, put a small, usable day kit on your phone. The goal is simple: the important information should open without asking the internet for anything.
Download the whole area
Save a map covering your starting point, destination and return route. Check the download has finished and that your phone has room for it. If you are changing accommodation, include the area around your next base. Adding a place to a favourites list is a different action from downloading its map.
Google Maps explains its offline limits: walking, cycling and public-transport directions are unavailable offline, as are live traffic updates. Offline driving directions need the route to fit inside the downloaded area. Save separate instructions for a pedestrian entrance, a meeting point or a stop your day depends on.
Make one short day note
Include your accommodation name, a useful contact number and the place where your group has agreed to meet. Use details confirmed by the provider rather than a timetable copied from an old review. For an organised outing, add the operator’s name and your reservation reference.
- Download the original confirmation files you need
- Save the meeting pin and a screenshot showing nearby streets
- Write down how you will return if you become separated
- Keep a minimal paper copy when everything depends on one phone
Screenshots are useful for fixed information. A ticket may require a changing code or its original app, so follow the issuer’s instructions before treating an image as your ticket. Keep the whole code visible and avoid posting a reservation online.
Test it with no connection
Switch on airplane mode and check that Wi-Fi is off too. Open the map, note and every document. Zoom in on small print. A cloud icon, blank page or sign-in request means that something still needs attention. Reconnect, finish the download and test again.
Restore the connection you intend to use afterwards. Do not accidentally leave airplane mode on if you expect calls or messages. Check your battery and available storage before setting off, while charging and a reliable connection are still convenient.
Leave room for changes
An offline copy preserves what you saved. It cannot tell you about a later cancellation or a changed entrance. Check fresh notices when you have a connection and confirm your return arrangement before heading farther away. Our guide to sharing an exact map point helps with the entrance details that a downloaded map cannot settle by itself.
