Your first month in Mérida is easier to organise when you separate immediate needs from decisions you can test first. Get the property working, learn your everyday journeys and understand the bills. Then make longer commitments and larger purchases with better information.

This is a household and routine checklist. Immigration, tax and employment questions depend on your circumstances. The official links below are starting points, not a determination of your legal position or a substitute for appropriate professional advice.

Start with the property handover

Walk through the home with the person handing over the keys. Test doors, windows, fans, air conditioning, taps and included appliances. Record the condition with dated photographs and agree how faults should be reported. Listing images cannot establish how something works on the day you move in.

Save the full address, neighbourhood, postcode and cross streets. Mark the actual entrance too. A gated development or apartment building may be entered from a different street than the one you first see on a map.

Create a short handover record:

  • Repair contact and when they can be reached
  • Included equipment and any outstanding faults
  • Relevant meter readings and the handover date
  • Services included in the rent and those charged separately
  • How you will see each bill before payment
  • Building or development rules affecting your routine

Keep account numbers and identity documents out of public photos or neighbourhood-group posts. Share only what is needed with the appropriate service or person.

Understand the services for this property

For electricity, identify the account and ask to see the relevant bill. CFE provides an official bill-query page. If you move partway through a billing period, clarify how the earlier and later usage will be handled. Another household’s bill is not a reliable forecast for your own.

Confirm the property’s water provider. JAPAY’s portal includes bill services and ways to report leaks or low pressure. A working website link does not confirm an individual account’s status, so check the arrangement attached to your address.

Ask who collects the rubbish, on which days and how you should put it out. Mérida’s municipal service catalogue is the official signpost for local services and reports. Do not assume a schedule from a different neighbourhood applies to your street.

Try out an ordinary week

Test your commute, shopping and regular activities at the times you would actually do them. Find a practical grocery option, a laundry if needed and your way home. If buses will be part of the routine, use our first Va-y-Ven journey guide for an initial trip without a tight deadline.

Test the home at normal working and sleeping hours as well. Can you use the internet where the desk will be? Is the noise acceptable when you need rest? Does the kitchen suit how you cook? Those answers are worth having before ordering furniture to solve problems you may not actually have.

End the month with a short action list

Give each unresolved question a next step: verify, test, request a repair or seek advice. For immigration matters, start with INM’s official information resource and check what applies to your own documents. Someone else’s experience does not establish your requirements.

Once your services and regular journeys make sense, you can make better choices about which parts of the routine to keep and which need changing.
