Give it time of its own. Starting with a list of everything you could add afterwards makes it easy to spend the visit watching the clock.

INAH places Dzibilchaltún north of Mérida. Its site plan identifies the central area, a sacbé causeway and the Temple of the Seven Dolls. Use those features to orient yourself, without assuming every section on a historical guide map is open to visitors.

Give the visit a focus

You might concentrate on the relationship between plazas and paths, spend time looking at the temple or arrange interpretation to help you understand the whole site. On a first visit, a clear theme is more useful than trying to remember every structure number.

INAH’s site plan shows the main areas. Once inside, follow the visitor route and instructions. Stay within permitted spaces and do not climb a structure simply because somebody else is doing so.

Plan transport to the visitor entrance

Save the actual entrance location. With a driver, agree on collection and the waiting point. If you intend to use a different service back, settle that part before leaving Mérida. An easy outward journey does not establish that a vehicle will be waiting when you finish.

Bring what you need for outdoor walking and breaks. For mobility requirements, ask about the specific route, surfaces and places to sit. Being close to a city says little about conditions inside an archaeological site. Our accessibility questions can help make that conversation concrete.

Separate archaeology, museum access and swimming

Xlacah cenote is part of the site, but its presence does not make admission a swimming outing. Plan an archaeological visit and follow staff restrictions. If you want to swim, choose a separate activity expressly offering that use, with suitable access and equipment.

If adding the museum, use INAH information and establish access separately. The general archaeological-site listing and site-museum information can describe different facilities or stages. Avoid basing the plan on an old photograph of a particular installation.

Add another stop only if you want it

After exploring, decide whether to eat, return to Mérida or continue towards the coast. Avoid committing to a second activity that forces you to shorten the first. If considering Progreso, allow for changing, eating and the journey back too.

For comparison with a larger archaeological day, see our Chichén Itzá and Uxmal guide. A visit works best when chosen for what interests you as well as its position on the map.

["post-162","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
