Choosing an agua fresca seems simple until you need to know whether sugar is already mixed in, whether it contains milk, or whether the price refers to a glass or a jug. The flavour on the sign is only part of the order. A few specific questions help you choose the drink you actually want with your meal.
Horchata illustrates the variety. SEFOTUR’s coconut version combines coconut, rice, coconut milk, cinnamon and sugar. That does not establish the formula for every horchata, or prove the absence of other ingredients in the one being offered to you.
Ask whether it is already mixed
“¿Ya está endulzada?” means “Is it already sweetened?” It is the useful question when the drink is waiting in a large jug or dispenser. A request for no sugar cannot remove sugar already in the batch. If each glass is made to order, ask what can be adjusted before preparation begins.
Name a particular sweetener if you need to use or avoid it. “Less sweet” expresses a preference but does not identify the ingredient or amount. You may prefer a drink the business can prepare to your needs, or plain water.
Check the base of a horchata
Ask whether it contains cow’s milk, condensed milk, evaporated milk, a plant-based drink or a commercial mixture. Coconut, rice or almond in the name does not answer that question. For an allergy, also ask about concentrates and preparation equipment.
A fruit drink can contain ingredients beyond fruit and water. Do not automatically treat it as compatible with a dietary restriction. Our food-allergy question guide helps you specify the actual ingredient you need to avoid.
Look at the size before ordering
See the glass or ask its capacity before choosing the largest option. For a shared jug, check how many glasses the seller expects it to fill and whether ice occupies part of that volume. Choose the size around how much you want to drink, rather than only how small the price difference appears.
You can ask whether the ice and water are suitable for drinking. The conversation provides information but is not a sanitary inspection. If the answer does not resolve your concern, choose an appropriate sealed, labelled drink instead.
Try a flavour without choosing for everyone
If samples are offered, ask for one before committing. Otherwise, a small serving can be enough to get to know an unfamiliar drink. Everyone at the table does not need to share the same flavour, and a jug is only useful if the group actually wants it.
Keep the full name of a version you enjoyed, including the base. That makes your next order more precise than remembering only its colour.
