A repair price is comparable only when you know what it includes. Replacing a part, correcting the source of a leak and restoring the finish can hide behind the same vague description. Ask what problem the work aims to solve and how the result will be checked.
If you rent, tell the owner first and establish who can approve the visit and cost. Hiring independently and expecting reimbursement afterwards creates another disagreement once the work has already been done.
Describe the symptom without prescribing the repair
Explain what happens, when it began and under what conditions. Water appears below the basin after use is more useful than I need every pipe replaced. Add safely taken photographs and equipment details where relevant.
Ask whether the diagnostic visit is chargeable, what it covers and whether that charge is credited if you proceed. Confirm who will attend and an arrival window. Do not send keys, permanent access codes or personal documents to an unverified contact.
Request a scope you can check
Articles 59 and 62 of the Federal Consumer Protection Law address written estimates and records of completed work, including parts, labour and applicable guarantee. For your decision, ask for exclusions to be clear as well.
- Proposed work and areas affected
- Identified materials or replacement parts
- Labour, call-out and transport charges
- Total, applicable tax and payment stages
- Expected duration and loss of use of the area
- Cleanup and removal of old materials
- What happens if an unseen problem is discovered
Compare like with like
One proposal may include making good and repainting; another may cover the pipe alone. One may remove the old equipment while another leaves it in the patio. Understand those differences before choosing on price.
For gas, electrical, structural or unfamiliar systems, use people competent in that work. Speed of arrival is not the only useful criterion. Request references for comparable jobs and ask about experience with this type of installation.
Approve changes before the cost grows
Agree that extra work must be explained and authorised before it proceeds. Ask what was found, which option is proposed, how much it adds and what happens if it is not done immediately. For a safety issue, have the area made safe while you decide with the appropriate professional.
At completion, check the result together against the scope. Keep receipts, photographs and guarantee terms. Record unresolved items rather than signing a completion statement that does not reflect the work. For recurring damp, agree when the result will be checked again.
